Removing and replacing the Saab 9000 front inner wing liner

Introduction

The front inner wing liner on the Saab 9000 must often be removed to gain access to other components. This procedure documents how to remove and replace the front inner wing liner.

Time required

Naturally, this will vary with both the individual and what they find when they get there, but as a general rule of thumb, allow about 10 minutes to remove the liner and 10 minutes to replace it.

Tools required

I assume some basic tools, such as a jack, axle stands, socket set, etc. However I do not assume you will already have all the necessary metric socket and spanner sizes, especially if you are in the USA. Here is a list so you can make sure you have all the necessary sizes before you start.

Sockets
  • 8mm
  • 10mm

Procedure

Removal
  1. Jack up the front of the car and place it on axle stands. If you are not sure where you can safely place the jack and axle stands on a 9000, go here for more information.

  2. Remove the front roadwheel.

  3. Remove the two 10mm bolts above the steering track rod.

  4. Remove the 10mm bolt at the top of the wheel arch, near the suspension strut.

  5. Remove the two 10mm bolts at the rear of the wheel arch.

  6. Remove the 10mm bolt just in front of the wheel arch (underneath).

  7. Remove the two 10mm bolts securing the wheel-arch liner to the subframe in front of the wheel arch from underneath.

  8. Remove the 8mm nuts on the inner edge of the wheel arch. These also secure the wheel arch outer trim.

  9. Remove the wheel arch outer trim.

  10. Wriggle out the front part of the wheel arch liner.

  11. Wriggle out the rear part of the wheel arch liner.
Refitting
  1. Wriggle the rear part of the wheelarch liner into place.

  2. Wriggle the front part of the wheel arch liner into place.

  3. Refit the outer wheel arch trim.

  4. Ensure the holes are aligned and refit the 10mm bolts, not forgeetting the one at the top, near the suspension strut.

  5. Refit the 8mm nuts.
